RHEL 8.6 contains a variety of enhancements that will improve your organization’s operational efficiency. While this is by no means an exhaustive list, here are a few of the beta’s standout features.

Administration of Stratis Storage and passthrough devices through the web console

We’ve introduced the ability to take on additional jobs in RHEL’s web console, based on the upstream Cockpit project, to make management easier.

• Passthrough device support in the web console: With 8.6, you’ll be able to use the web console to set up “passthrough” for host PCI and USB devices to virtual machines. This implies you can use the console to create a virtual machine with exclusive access to a device without using any CLI instructions.
• Support for Stratis Storage in the web console (tech preview): Stratis Storage is a storage-management solution for Linux that focuses on ease of use for advanced storage features such as file system snapshots, thin provisioning, and more without requiring knowledge of or direct interaction with the underlying storage layers and commands. We’ve made it even easier in 8.6 by allowing administrators to control Stratis Storage from the web portal.

New RHEL, new roles

When it comes to managing large systems, automation is the name of the game. We’re continuing to work on making it simpler to automate operations, standardize large-scale installations, and simplify day-to-day management with RHEL 8.6 Beta.

We’ve added even more system roles to RHEL 8.6 to simplify RHEL configuration for common activities.

• High Availability Cluster System Role: With the release of 8.6, this job will transition from tech preview to fully supported. It provides automated tooling for building RHEL HA Cluster systems that are consistent and stable. Prescriptive use case scenarios, settings, and architecture recommendations make it easier to set up a HA Cluster.
• System Role for web console: The online console, as previously said, makes RHEL administration much easier. We’ve also made it much easier to set up the web console! This job automates the RHEL web console installation and configuration, including specifying which web console packages should be installed, initiating and enabling the web console, and optionally adjusting parameters like the idle timeout.
• Firewall System Role: A properly designed firewall is an essential component of network security. This job allows companies to automate the administration of their firewall setup. RHEL 7 and 8 managed nodes are supported by the new Firewall System Role capability, and RHEL 9 nodes will be supported as well.
