IT and cyber security experts don’t often conceive of their work as a project, but they should.

Assume you work in IT as an administrator for a large company’s email servers and need to deploy a new update or patch the servers for security issues. These changes may affect thousands of end-users and will necessitate the participation of multiple stakeholders throughout the organization.

Usually, those of us in IT have not always handled this well, resulting in a patchwork approach across the network without planning for dependencies, unwittingly exposing vulnerabilities, and no one truly seeing the job through to completion. Such operations are, in essence, projects and should be managed as such. However, they’ve heard many IT and cyber security experts wonder why it matters and why they should be concerned about project management.

These professionals usually associate project management with big installations that take months or years, or with a costly and inefficient policy structure. Nothing could be further from the truth, though. Instead, they discovered that possessing project management abilities can help you manage your work more smoothly and advance your IT career.

Why Project Management in IT?

IT errors usually happen when workers are used to working on a lower-scale network that does not necessitate formal project management skills. After all, if you’re changing a small business network that only affects fifteen employees, you can rapidly organize it by just strolling around the office.

However, planning and procedure skills are required when working on larger networks or doing cyber security activities, particularly in larger, big businesses.

In reality, it is important to anticipate dependencies, such as having systems that are out of date or incompatible with the most recent software changes, before executing updates or rolling out patches. If you don’t, you risk causing downtime and additional expenditures to recover from the problems or vulnerabilities you introduced.

More young IT professionals are better at addressing technical requirements but less so with planning and processes. As a result, everything might turn into a crisis, and your staff will be forced to react.

Certification in a project management approach, such as PRINCE2®, minimizes stress and provides confidence for important IT difficulties since you know where you are and where you’re going.

Overcoming Resistance to Project Management in IT

People who have never used project management previously may be resistive to it; they may perceive it to be resource-intensive, to have excessive control and governance, or to impose stopping points that slow down the job.

Project management skills, on the other hand, are essential for IT professionals both now and in the future. Understanding how to effectively coordinate with stakeholders, gaining resources from sponsors, and learning how to get things funded are all important skills for any prospective IT or cyber security executive to acquire. Knowing how to communicate effectively, build a business case, and sequence activities are all highly transferrable abilities within and outside of the IT sector.

When you start working in project management, you’re expected to operate across multiple silos or divisions, which involves broadening your experience beyond the IT basement. Being well-known throughout your organization also makes you more attractive, especially when other department heads or C-suite executives are making the calls.

If you want to be a vice president or even an executive, having project management experience and certifications, as well as cross-domain competence and T-shaped professional talents, is one of the strongest strategies to advance your career.
