World Approaches to Change Management

Six Steps to Effective Organizational Change Management | PulseLearning

One of the first phrases ascribed to Heraclitus about 500BC states that the only constant changes. This is usually cited, yet there is now a majority that he was wrong! Because the rate of change has changed and our perspective on it has shifted to incorporate innovation, change is no longer a constant.

Change management was probably first mentioned in the 1950s when Kirk Lewin established his three-stage concept of unfreezing, change, and refreeze. Google gives over 4 billion hits when you search for change management!

These historical concepts and their expanding significance are interesting, but what about now and the future?

The Change Management Institute has released its Global Insights 2022 study, which provides insight into the profession’s voice. In their report, they examine their 2019 forecasts, and while many have come true, many have arrived earlier than expected, due to a global push created by the Covid-19 pandemic, as efficiently managing change was important for the survival of many businesses.

The article emphasizes that the pandemic has made putting people first “more vital than ever,” and that Change Professionals should recognize that life has been difficult for many. In this context, Change Professionals have a chance to train others on the value of empathy and establishing resilient teams.

The article also draws some future lessons, and my particular takeaways are as follows:

  • The demand for skilled change managers with strong technical expertise and exceptional interpersonal abilities will only grow.
  • If there was ever a period when one size fits all, it is not today and will never be in the future.
  • Any change expert who believes they know everything is likely to follow the example of that well-known Mauritian bird, the Dodo.
