Things you can take TODAY to boost your Project Management career

There is a global scarcity of project experts, which gives a significant potential for project managers to advance. Over the last decade, project management has become one of the greatest areas of business in the United Kingdom.

The ILX whitepaper, Increasing Graduate Employability in 2021 (sign up for a free download), focuses on the skills gap in the project profession. By 2027, almost 87 million experts will be required to perform project responsibilities all around the world. That is why, at PRINCE2, we are committed to helping project managers realize their full potential and pursue a rewarding career in project management.

So, whether you’re just getting started in project management or seeking to grow, now is the day to get started! Each of the following suggestions may be implemented right now, and there is no better time than now to enhance your career.

Take a training course

Let’s get this one out of the way first; naturally, we’ll suggest taking a training course. The UK is experiencing a severe talent shortage, but an internationally recognized certificate like PRINCE2 or PRINCE2 Agile may help you develop the business-ready skills that will set you apart and improve your employability.

Those currently working in project jobs may be offered training courses as part of a skills development program by their employers. However, this is not always the case, and you must reclaim control of your fate and professional growth. Remember that it is YOU, not your manager, who is in command of your career.

When it comes to getting recognized project management training, an e-learning course is a terrific way to study while still working. For optimal convenience, e-learning courses are self-paced and available on-demand.

Take a risk and do something you’ve never done before

Doing something that scares you is one of the best ways to enhance your job – or, in fact, any aspect of your life! Do you despise public speaking? Make a case for yourself to give a presentation at work. Do you have a habit of always being a team player? Sign up to be in charge of a project. Attend a networking event or seek a position at a higher level in your field; the list is endless! Anything that forces you to venture outside of your comfort zone will extend your experience and help you advance, so take on the challenge now! If the worst happens and things don’t go as planned, learn from your mistakes, brush yourself off, and try again!

Update your LinkedIn profile

Many of us put off updating our LinkedIn profiles until we are looking for a new job. Maintaining a professional social media presence, on the other hand, maybe quite beneficial. For starters, LinkedIn is a great networking tool that may help you and your organization get more attention for the job you perform. It’s also a great place to start a conversation about a topic you’re interested in and get feedback from other experts.

Aside from that, upgrading your LinkedIn page is a great method to reflect. Taking time to reflect can help you realize what you’ve accomplished and how beneficial your effort and expertise have been so far in your career. Include details about the projects you’ve worked on, as well as links, results, outcomes, and important accomplishments.

Similarly, updating your CV or adding to any other online portfolio of your work is a good idea. It’s usually a good idea to stay current on a job while it’s still fresh in your mind.

Ask for feedback

Asking for feedback, as terrifying as it may seem, is a very common aspect of working life. Getting feedback from your supervisor, stakeholders, peers, or team is one of the most important things you can do to progress your career. Getting other people’s perspectives and ideas can teach you a lot.

Unfortunately, many one-on-one meetings were canceled due to the epidemic, but there is no reason why these couldn’t be done online. So, even if you haven’t returned to work, there’s no reason to wait for input from your boss. While official evaluations are usually done once a year, less formal input may and should be given regularly.

And it brings us well to our next point…

Set some goals for yourself

Setting objectives should be helped by feedback from management, stakeholders, and peers. Take what they’ve spoken and convert it into goals that you can achieve. Make a list of your objectives and a plan to attain them. Keep them simple and reachable, since realistic goals can keep you more motivated.

Set aside some time for personal growth

Personal growth does not have to be a time-consuming endeavor. It might be as simple as reading business news, articles, or blogs for 10 minutes after your lunch break. A nice place to start is the PRINCE2 blog. Keeping your finger on the pulse will teach you new things and provide you with a different viewpoint.

Another method to grow as a person is to network. Bettering your interactions with others, whether it’s online with fellow professionals or with your team, can do wonders for your self-confidence and, eventually, your career. In the case of your team, improving your working relationship is always a good thing, so set aside some time today to speak with them.
