According to a World Health Organization (WHO) mental health study, an estimated 264 million individuals worldwide suffer from depression, which is one of the primary causes of disability. When you consider that many of these people also have anxiety symptoms, implementing a Six Sigma approach, the global economy loses $1 trillion in output each year.

Workplace stress can result in physical and mental health problems, as reported in the media.

What are some of the mental health risks associated with work?

  • Ineffective communication and management methods
  • Limited decision-making authority or influence over one’s job area
  • Employees receive little help
  • Rigid working hours
  • Tasks or work objectives that are unclear

Let’s connect the Lean Six Sigma principles:

  • Concentrate on the customer (or employee)
  • Recognize how work is completed (the process or value stream)
  • Control and enhance process flow
  • Reduce waste and non-value steps
  • Encourage collaboration and provide people with the necessary tools
  • Manage improvement activity in a friendly, systematic manner

How can these principles be of assistance? A solid support system at work is similar to a strong family, and a strong family feels comfortable and content in their circumstances. Mental health is a difficult subject, and scientists are continually unraveling its complexities. One thing is certain: having a strong patient support system can move mountains until a more scientific understanding of mental health becomes available.

There are wonderful organizations out there that are both a support system and a terrific source of information. The National Alliance on Mental Illness, or NAMI.org, is one such organization.

Understanding how the brain functions for mental health may be the one aspect that connects us all as our global economy becomes busier and international cultures begin to collaborate. In the meantime, maybe we can rely on Six Sigma approaches in the workplace and groups like NAMI to help work out the problems.
