Benefits of Using Six Sigma in Project Management

Six Sigma methodology gives you the tools and techniques to improve products or processes by identifying problem areas and addressing them using various statistical and empirical tools. The main objective is to improve the process for delivering goods and services for optimal customer satisfaction. The primary goal of Six Sigma is to reduce the number of defects in an organisation to less than 3.4 per 1 million units.

The concept was originally introduced by Bill Smith in 1986, while working at Motorola. Over the years it has been refined and polished into a popular theory of principles and methods. It is now one of the major quality improvement methodologies in various organisations over the decades.

What is Six Sigma?

Six Sigma is a set of management tools and techniques designed to improve business by reducing the likelihood of error. It is a data-driven approach that uses a statistical methodology for eliminating defects.

The etymology is based on the Greek symbol Sigma, or “σ”, a statistical term for measuring process deviation from the process mean or target. “Six Sigma” comes from the bell curve used in statistics, where one Sigma symbolizes a single standard deviation from the mean. If the process has six Sigmas, three above and three below the mean, the defect rate is classified as “extremely low.”

Six Sigma Methodology

Six Sigma follows two project methodologies. These methodologies, composed of five phases each, comprise of the acronyms DMAIC and DMADV.

DMAIC is an acronym for Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve and Control. It is used to improve the existing products in an organisation.

The second methodology, DMADV, is short for Define, Measure, Analyse, Design and Verify. It is used when an organisation has to create a new service or product from scratch.

Six Sigma Certification

The primary goal to invest in a Six Sigma certification is to acquire skills needed to identify errors in a process and eliminate them.

If your career interests lie in quality management, then getting a Six Sigma certification is the way to go. There are different skill levels that you can achieve; Yellow Belt, Green belt or master a Black Belt. Achieve the tools that you need to manage processes and projects today.
