What is Course Training: TOGAF?

The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF), is used by organizations to design an IT infrastructure that is adapted to meet their requirements. TOGAF ensures that its systems can stand the test of time and evolve with the organization’s complexity by implementing consistency across the technology landscape and providing alignment between different teams.
TOGAF was created in 1995 and is currently maintained by The Open Group, an independent industry association. It was built on an earlier framework known as Technical Architecture Framework for Information Management (TAFIM), originally devised by the U.S. Defence Dept.

A wide variety of Enterprise Architectures may be developed using the TOGAF standard. There are additional frameworks that are more focused on specific outputs for vertical industries such as government, manufacturing,  telecommunications, finance, and defense, that may be used in combination with it. The TOGAF Architecture Development Method (ADM) is a fundamental element of the TOGAF standard for building an Enterprise Architecture that satisfies business objectives.

What is new in TOGAF 9.2?

Launched in 2018, TOGAF 9.2 is an update designed to provide better organization of documents that define the framework in the form of a TOGAF library. In the TOGAF Standard, Version 9.2, improvements have been made to the document structure, corrections have been made to mistakes and obsolete information has been removed. In this release, changes to the Business Architecture and the Content Metamodel have been made. All of these modifications make the TOGAF framework more user-friendly and easier to manage. It preserves the TOGAF Standard, Version 9.1’s main features and structure.

Modular Structure

The TOGAF standard has a modular framework that allows for the following features to be added:

  • A greater degree of accessibility – each element has a specific function and may be utilized as an independent set of guidelines.
  • Adoption of the TOGAF standard in phases.
  • As part of the TOGAF methodology, the TOGAF Library is a collection of guidance materials to assist in the actual implementation of the standard.

Content Framework

The TOGAF standard offers a content structure to ensure better uniformity in the outputs produced while following the Architecture Development Method (ADM). The TOGAF content framework is a comprehensive representation of architectural deliverables.

Extended Guidance

There are several ideas and recommendations in the TOGAF standard that may be used to help teams inside bigger companies create a structure of architecture based on an overall architectural governance system. Included are the following concepts:

  • Partitioning – a variety of approaches and considerations on how to separate the different architectures inside an enterprise
  • Architecture Repository – a logical data structure for an Architecture Repository that may be utilized as an integrated repository for all results generated by running the ADM.
  • Capability Framework – a systematic specification of the organization, skills, roles, and responsibilities necessary to run a successful Enterprise Architecture Capability; the TOGAF standard also gives guidelines on how to select and build a suitable Architecture Capability.

Architectural Styles

Several architectural styles may be employed with the TOGAF standard. Combined, these resources illustrate in detail how the ADM may be applied to various circumstances, such as:

  • The many iteration applications that are feasible inside the ADM, as well as when each approach should be used.
  • Identifying the many forms of architectural development necessary inside an organization and how they relate to one another.
  • The application of the TOGAF ADM to Service-Oriented Architectures (SOAs), risk and security, and so on.

Additional ADM Detail

The TOGAF Standard, Version 9.2, contains more extensive information for enabling the implementation of the ADM than previous versions of the TOGAF standard. Major areas for improvement are:

  • The Architecture Vision and Business Architecture stages provide extensive assistance on the creation of the Business Architecture, with an emphasis on Business Capabilities, Value Streams, and Organization Maps.
  • The Technology Architecture phase acknowledges that new technologies are increasingly driving technology-driven transformation.
