The two ideas have quite different perspectives even if they are complementary.

People have questioned us as a member of the Business Resilience Framework authoring team about the distinction between business resilience and change management. Each has a distinct focus, and progress, to put it simply, is the difference.

Business Resilience is about providing businesses with the tools they need to advance in VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous) environments. Progress can be defined as the ability to bounce back from an event, continue moving forward in the face of challenges, or bounce along to maintain a position.

Change Management is designed to provide ways for successfully planning and implementing change initiatives and to assist businesses and their people in managing the impact of change. It enables:

  • overcoming resistance to change
  • providing effective encouragement and support to teams and individuals to accept change
  • Key stakeholders are managed and maintained aware during the change process.
  • accelerating the implementation of change initiatives.

There is no denying the need for change management, which is a component of effective corporate resilience strategies. The possibility that changes could be successfully implemented but prevent the organization from moving forward is rarely discussed. Some changes cause an organization to backward!

Business Resilience examines the organization’s definition of progress in light of the current situation and what is required to make progress. In different contexts, progress will be defined differently. In the event of a world pandemic or a civil war, advancement might mean merely surviving. On the other hand, if the VUCA level is lower, progress is more likely to represent an improvement in one or more organizational characteristics as shown by the KPIs (bouncing forward).

Business resilience starts (or should start!) long before a crisis occurs. To give the organization the underlying strength it needs to deal with any events that may come, resilience foundations are put in place.

‘Business Resilience – A practical guide to sustained progress delivered at pace’ provides a framework for dealing with operating in VUCA settings. The PACE culture is at the core of the framework (Purposeful mindset; Application of tools; Capability and skills; Elevating energy). A PACE culture encourages employees to give their all while taking a unified, deliberate approach to advancing the company. The supporting Progress Cycle selects and puts into action projects that are practical in the current environment and will help the organization advance.

Resilience in business and change management go hand in hand. Changes must be done for a business to be resilient; these changes may involve introducing new or revised goods, services, procedures, or business methods. Smooth execution of this is ensured by effective change management. However, it is crucial that the appropriate modifications be implemented, and that these build on strong foundations.

Customers who are currently using Michael, Allison, or Lisa in their V3 form shouldn’t experience any interruptions while switching to the expressive voices because it will still sound like the same speaker, just more naturally and conversationally. We had to execute our budget process on a complicated network of 27 linked spreadsheets because there was no money left over after a costly enterprise resource planning (ERP) setup to fund additional systems. The only one who understood how they operated was Fred, and now he was gone.

If there was ever an example of key-person risk, this was it.

A world without spreadsheets 

We did our best to muddle through the following budgetary process up until we discovered IBM Planning Analytics with Watson. For the first time, we could visualize a world devoid of spreadsheets. We could see a society where everyone collaborated on a single platform and shared a common philosophy to unite and reach a consensus on data-driven decisions for the benefit of the company. Even better, it was a world where no one person was needed.

But that is not where the story ends.

Making sense of the data

We learned the value of data management after we got away from spreadsheets. We discovered a ton of issues with our master data that had all been concealed through spreadsheet aggregation. For years, we had been blissfully unaware of these difficulties, but now it was time to deal with them. We could now make sense of all of our data together because IBM Planning Analytics gave us complete visibility over everything.

These issues were not small ones. In reality, we realized we had been selling some products for less than what it cost to create them after finding instances where our product costs were significantly overstated. Working at a high level and manually updating spreadsheets made it possible to miss errors, even ones that seemed obvious.

You do not doubt that the money you spent on IBM Planning Analytics more than paid for itself. We got so much more than just reducing the key-person risk, which was all we intended to do. We influenced the organization to appreciate its data and desire to use it for the benefit of the company.

Data value unlocking with the promise of AI

Leaders sometimes struggle to recognize the significance of analytical tools. Spreadsheets appear to be fine yet are not. They create a false sense of security in you. The business logic associated with the spreadsheet owner is a risk in and of itself, but the spreadsheet’s extreme simplicity also hides a wealth of information.

Using trustworthy AI and data analytics to increase health equity and decrease health inequalities.

The biggest problem currently facing US public health professionals is achieving health equity. Despite allocating a much higher percentage of its GDP to healthcare, the country was placed last among high-income countries in access to healthcare and equity in a 2021 study from the Commonwealth Fund.

Healthcare disparities are strongly related to issues of access, cost, and quality of care that are related to race, ethnicity, gender, and other demographic and socioeconomic factors. The COVID-19 pandemic brought health inequities in the US into sharp focus. Analyses of federal, state, and municipal healthcare statistics reveal that people of color bore a disproportionate burden of cases and deaths.

IBM and the Rhode Island Department of Health worked together in 2020 to identify new and existing data patterns to support the agency’s overall response to the health problem. Real-time, data-driven decisions resulting from this effort were able to identify inequities caused by pandemics, such as a lack of vaccine access. The project ultimately resulted in more equitable emergency response services in the areas of Rhode Island that most needed them.

The data-leveraging lessons discovered during the pandemic are already being applied by state health departments around the nation to a variety of public health problems affecting underserved groups. Food hardship, unplanned pregnancies, increasing suicide rates, and opioid addiction are among the challenges that health authorities are concentrating on. Leaders may now make decisions that are smarter, quicker, and more effective to advance health equity and improve public health outcomes.

Creating a citizen 360 view

To ensure that quality data can be accessible by the appropriate parties at the appropriate times, regardless of where it lives, the journey begins with the development of a data fabric architecture. Data literacy through visualization and storytelling

How to make sense of all that data is a problem that both private and public companies face when collecting huge amounts of data.

For instance, despite a substantial rise in poverty over the past ten years, fewer people have been enrolling in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), a federal food aid program run by state health departments and local organizations. The slow pace of modernization—all WIC payments were still issued as paper vouchers until recently—and the ongoing stigma associated with receiving federal help are thought to be contributing reasons. Finding and treating these variables, among others, is necessary for aiding.

The WIC Enrollment Collaboration Act of 2020 mandates that state health departments count families who are eligible for WIC but have not yet enrolled. That count can be helped by a data fabric with a 360-degree perspective. Additionally, it can assist states in developing and implementing referral procedures and running extensive outreach programs (also detailed in the Act). Data can be used by states cooperatively to evaluate and enhance WIC access and more effectively reduce food hardship.

The attitude toward cybersecurity has changed in recent years. When a corporation has a breach is more important than whether it has one. But according to the most recent data, organizations that use zero trust can save spending more than $1 million on a breach.

Record High Costs for Data Breaches

Over 80% of the firms surveyed had more than one data breach, according to the 2022 IBM Cost of a Data Breach Report. According to the study, the average cost of data breaches would reach a record high of $4.35 million in 2022, an increase of 12.7% over the previous two years. The average cost of a data breach is substantially higher in the United States than in any other nation, at $9.44 million. Additionally, when remote working contributed to the incident, the average cost of a data breach rises from $4.02 million to $4.99 million.

Data breaches cost differently depending on the industry. Despite being the most expensive sector for breaches over the previous 12 years, the cost peaked in 2022 at $10.10 million. The cost of a health care breach has increased by 41.6% since the 2020 report, which is very alarming. With an average of $5.97 million, the financial sector was far behind pharmaceutical, technology, and energy in the rankings.

Organizations must now change their strategy from breach prevention to risk minimization. They need to actively seek to minimize the harm caused by a breach in addition to lowering the likelihood of it happening. After all, each data breach has a variety of negative effects on organizations, many of which are usually disregarded. Breach-related price increases for customers were a result of 60% of the surveyed groups. Costs like lost customers and reputational harm are challenging to estimate. Zero Trust Reduces Cost of a Breach

Employees use a variety of devices and locations to access the network. For businesses that still adhere to the old way of thinking, this increases the chance of a breach. In the modern world, protecting a perimeter is simply impossible.

Zero trust users experience a 20.5% decrease in costs for a data breach compared to non-users. With zero trust, unless proven differently, all gadgets, users, and programs are taken for unauthorized usage. Zero trust is a framework that makes use of numerous techniques, including micro-segmentation and multifactor authentication, as opposed to a single method. The overall strategy focuses on ensuring that employees have only the restricted access they require to do their duties. Breaches are restricted to a considerably smaller region by micro-segmentation (dividing the network into tiny fragments), which can reduce the cost.

Compared to those without it, organizations using zero trust deployed reduced average breach costs by about $1 million. Additionally, a breach at a company that has a well-developed zero trust model costs $1.51 million less than it would at a company that is just starting on its zero trust journey.

The Way of the Future

In recent years, there have been more businesses employing zero trust. However, a significant portion still faces a high chance of an expensive breach because there isn’t zero trust. Only 41% of those polled admitted to having no trust. That represents an improvement from 2021 when 35% of organizations had partially or fully implemented a zero trust architecture.

According to the survey, key infrastructure companies in the financial services, industrial, technology, energy, transportation, communication, health care, education, and public sectors do not employ zero trust at a higher rate than average (79%). However, these industries must seriously contemplate zero trust because the costs of a breach are $1 million higher than the global average.

Moving Forward With Zero Trust
