How to Combine the ITIL Best Practices with the Agile Mindset?

Companies are always looking for new methods to handle their service management problems. However, solutions will no longer come from a single source.

As a result, the goal is to arrive at the “lightbulb moment,” which is about a collaboration among people and the varied ways they employ. Each technique is intended to produce a result for a team by identifying pain areas, solutions, and how value is generated.

Again, the ITIL 4 framework fosters a creative culture by allowing employees to go where they are best for the firm while providing “guide rails” for safety.

Even as an ITIL 4 supporter, you’ve had to understand the value of accepting new methodologies.

Bringing ITIL 4 and Scrum together

The team is led by an Agile team that uses approaches such as two-week sprints and retrospectives, among others.

So, recently receiving PeopleCert’s Scrum Master certification has given me a better understanding of how the team operates. It has also demonstrated how ITIL, and even PRINCE2 Agile, can coexist with Scrum and DevOps.

ITIL 4-trained individuals, I feel, may benefit from iterative, Agile approaches; finding a happy medium between using processes and facilitating change, while also knowing how standards may differ from team to team.

It all comes back to successful collaboration – putting yourself in the shoes of others to work better together.

With an Agile certification, You can now recognize the distinctions between this and ITIL and begin to bridge the gaps. Lastly, establishing common ground with colleagues in the same and other teams, as well as being cross-trained, is important.

What is the point of combining various best practice approaches to service management?

Collaboration across multiple best practice techniques has one overarching goal: to ensure the unifying goal of producing solutions that are more customer-centric and generate value outcomes.

TOGAF, or The Open Group Architecture Framework, is a brand name in corporate architecture, as well as business and digital transformation. Making TOGAF 10 easy to use and implement was one of The Open Group’s top aims during its development. The Open Group has not yet given information on how to get TOGAF 10 certified. There is no indication that the current certification method will alter, nor that existing TOGAF certifications would become invalid.

Of course, this brings up the question of what is the best way to learn TOGAF.

TOGAF 9.2 is recommended for newcomers to study first. The current TOGAF 10 material may not be user-friendly for newbies, but because the underlying foundation is mostly the same, transitioning, later on, will be simple. There are also numerous free TOGAF tools available to help practitioners comprehend the new framework.

Existing practitioners will not need to change their EA techniques now that TOGAF 10 is available. In reality, by familiarizing themselves with the TOGAF Series Guides, they should find it simple to use the new framework. The Open Group presently has no information about bridging certification.

Red Hat invests much in open-source software maintenance throughout the life of each product. We take on the responsibility of not only supporting the software we ship but also resolving concerns, such as security. “Shifting left” to introduce security checks and work during the early development and management phases is essential to our success.

As part of this, engineering teams can use the threat modeling technique to discover security flaws during the design phase of their projects. When implemented early, this allows for quick discovery and mitigation of vulnerabilities, therefore boosting the security of a product at a lower cost.

What is threat modeling?

As defined by OWASP, threat modeling is a process in which potential risks are discovered, graded for severity, and potential mitigations addressed. Threat modeling occurs less formally when you consider each action made in a given system and extrapolate how these may affect its security profile, either now or in the future.

It is important to emphasize that threat modeling is a process, not a tool. While tools can make the process more efficient (for example, by offering visualization, tracking changes over time, or identifying modifications to the software that are more likely to affect its threat model), technologies cannot presently replace humans thinking about how other humans would attack a system.

  • Network configuration
  • Input (or data) validation
  • Exception/error handling

How Should Threat Modeling Be Approached?

One of the reasons the Red Hat OpenShift Streams for the Apache Kafka team was successful throughout the threat modeling process was that they divided the task into smaller segments, as described in How to Approach Threat Modeling. This required concentrating on a feature produced by each team rather than developing a single threat model for the entire workload. This method had many great advantages:

  • Smaller chunks of work allow for more granular progress tracking, which matches well with agile-style delivery teams and provides leadership with a consistent perspective of progress.
  • This method produces more complex threat models, which leads to the identification of more findings.
  • Decomposing the threat model, or breaking it down into features, allows the threat model to be reused as a dependency for other workload features that use the same components.
  • By considering threat mitigations for each component, a single threat may have different mitigations at the total workload level, resulting in better resilience against those threats.
  • Issues with a single threat model, such as an untreated critical threat, do not become launch-blocking for the full workload, but rather for the individual feature.
  • Aligning the boundaries of a threat model with the scope of each team meant that the team regarded components built by other teams within Red Hat OpenShift Streams for Apache Kafka as “external systems” that needed to be protected against, suggesting that the threat models thoroughly examined the natural inter-team communication difficulties.

The product security team was given a thorough overview of the feature/component at the start of each threat model and could assist the engineers on what Red Hat would consider a secure footprint for a Red Hat-managed solution.

The threat model was built collaboratively in an agile way over some weeks, during which probing questions were presented to the engineering team and the answers they supplied were verified and reviewed against Red Hat’s security requirements.

Those that could not be fully answered were labeled as “Potential Flaws” and ranked according to the risk associated with the service. The security validation stage, when completed properly, can aid in accounting for known and new risks and attacks.

When the threat model was nearly finished, it was shared with the entire team for a comprehensive assessment, and all team members were encouraged to contribute any additional possible threats they had identified.

With the guidance of the security team, this form of collaborative effort provides the development team complete ownership of the service’s security posture.

An Accessible Technology Hackathon

Hackathon generates over 100 ideas to combat Covid-19 - EPFL

The aim of the hackathon organized by the Swiss Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired and Red Hat was to create new solutions that make everyday life easier for blind and visually impaired individuals. At the event, blind, visually impaired, and visible technology professionals collaborated closely on a variety of initiatives, ranging from obstacle detection to autonomously detecting the expiry date of supermarket products.

The Swiss Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (SBV) organized a hackathon for blind, visually impaired, and sighted individuals in partnership with technology partner Red Hat and sponsors VSHN and Tech Data. Around 30 programmers and IT professionals gathered at the Sheraton Hotel in Zurich to collaborate on practical solutions to assist blind and visually impaired individuals in their daily lives.

The two project’s initiators, Luciano Butera, Head of the Technology and Innovation Department at SBV, and Dominik Wotruba, Head of TechSales, Switzerland at Red Hat, greeted them at the ceremony. They also presented the project ideas that had been submitted in advance of the event. Five of them were eventually chosen for the final round. Especially, applications for:

  • identifying food expiration dates
  • identify possible obstacles
  • discovering tandems for activities
  • menu reading in restaurants
  • asking the status of the train station’s lifts and escalators, including the indoor route

Open source projects

Following that, the participants were separated into five different projects. The majority of these come from Red Hat or SBV, although some came from customers and partners as well. “Small communities grew up around the concepts – very similar to open source projects,” Dominik Wotruba observes. “Everyone was allowed to pitch in their expertise and so contribute to the project’s success,” he continues.

The teams then had to create a working prototype in the smallest amount of time. VSHN provided each team with its cloud operating platform APPUiO, which is based on Red Hat OpenShift, while Tech Data donated its AI solution Tech Lab. Red Hat programmers also built fundamental frameworks for constructing solutions, known as skeletons, to make it easier for project members to get started. This was quickly followed by frantic thinking and coding. “The participants worked concentrated —- nearly nonstop, and you could feel that individuals were on a mission,” Luciano Butera explains.

Menus are accessible via a smartphone app

The teams had to present their answer to a jury of four at the end of the hackathon. In addition to Luciano Butera and Dominik Wotruba, the applications were analyzed and examined by Jonas Janz, a Red Hat solution architect, and René Jaun, an editor at the publishing business Netzmedien.

The “MENUista” project by Selamet Aydogdu, Dominique Hofstetter, Lars Jenzer, Alexey Loubyansky, and Erik Jan de Wit received special praise from the jury. During the hackathon, they created a smartphone app that displays the menus of neighboring restaurants. Blind and visually impaired people can then have these read to them directly and are no longer reliant on sighted companions.

According to Luciano Butera, the benefits of the solution, the project’s progress, and the presentation were all important factors in the evaluation. According to him, “MENUista” looked impressive in all areas. “The app is simple to use and does exactly what it should,” says the hackathon’s co-initiator. “As far as the team was able to design the solution during the hackathon, it delivers the most advantage to the consumers.” He is also sure that automatically compiling menus from adjacent eateries is often helpful. “The winning product is a good illustration of how software for the blind and visually disabled may also be useful for the sighted,” says Luciano Butera.

“Outstanding example of customer-centric work”

When asked to summarize the hackathon, the response was unanimously positive. Aarno Aukia, Co-Founder of the sponsor VSHN, provided advice to the hackathon teams. “When finding their way around the event area, the blind and visually impaired participants were sometimes delighted to have assistance,” he observed, “but as soon as everyone sat down at the laptop and started working, suddenly there was no difference at all.”

Christopher Schmidt, a participant at the event and a Red Hat partner innoQ Schweiz GmbH, compliments the “open, almost friendship-like attitude” that prevailed on site. “One of the pleasures of the two days was the opportunity to hear directly from the individuals who are affected by the difficulties daily and to figure out solutions,” he writes in his report.

“For the teams, it was important to develop solutions that are precisely tailored to the needs of the users,” says Dominik Wotruba. “It was therefore absolutely crucial to respond to the input of the blind and visually impaired participants, and the hackathon was a prime example of customer-centered work.”

The Australian public sector is one of the world’s most consistent supporters of PRINCE2. Tanner James executive director John Howarth discusses why it’s become so important to successful project delivery.

Since the ideas of the PRINCE2 project management technique were conceptualized in the late 1990s, there has been a desire to use them in the Australian public sector.

Today, the Australian government and its ministries are among the most active supporters of the PRINCE2 framework worldwide. It is widely used at the state level, not simply at the federal level. According to the Victorian Government’s IT dashboard 85 projects have used the PRINCE2 technique, accounting for 30% of all projects – the highest for any single method.

The financial scale is also quite large. According to the same data, the overall lifecycle cost of active projects is $851 million, while the cost of completed projects is $27 million. It also did not happen by chance. The adoption has been encouraged by a clear knowledge that using a consistent framework to manage projects results in good outcomes. As a result, it’s employed in everything from local government projects to multibillion-dollar defense programs.

This breadth of application has assured PRINCE2’s nationwide adoption. Over 20,000 individuals have been trained, and every government department has embraced it. It’s a way that public workers trust, whether they work in IT, policy, or business, and it ranges from taxation, social services, and health to law and order, defense, and agriculture. They usually use it throughout their careers, moving from department to department.

Why has PRINCE2 become so important?

PRINCE2 has gained importance for some reasons:

  1. It brings everyone to the same pagePRINCE2 provides the structure for agreeing on a common understanding of the result (‘product’), allowing for more autonomous decision-making and reducing red tape. I like to refer to it as the “digital camera moment.” It’s that single snapshot of the objective that everyone is striving towards.As a result, individuals at all levels of the organization are clear, empowered, and supported in making decisions. Also, persons with the necessary talents and capabilities have been assembled for the project. As a result, not only is project delivery smoother but there are fewer problems.
  2. The importance of a shared languageRegardless of the project or department, terms like product, activity, resources, stages, project boards, and service users are all defined, understood, and utilized as a part of everyday language. This consistency in terminology is effective. It eliminates ambiguity and allows projects to get off to a quick start.
  3. The procedure for dealing with change is well definedThis is well recognized and always felt. Everyone follows a structure and governance. From the sponsor and project executive board to the project manager, roles are clearly defined. This means that roles and project expectations are specified and backed by a governance structure that outlines the step-by-step steps that constitute the agreed-upon path to achieving the goal.

The Truth About Using PRINCE2

It’s a common misperception that training and templates guarantee project success. In my experience, the opposite is often true. While they are both required for using PRINCE2, they cannot deliver the project on their own. It’s a trap that far too many businesses fall into.

Instead, keep to the following three-step philosophy:

  1. People – Understand. Individuals must be trained and understand the framework, as well as learn from global best practices and become acquainted with the repeating parts. When an organization has a trained cohort of accredited PRINCE2 practitioners, it establishes a great base for long-term success.
  2. Projects – Apply. There are no two projects or departments alike. Introducing a tax reform is not the same as providing a bush fire readiness strategy. There are various specialists and technology involved, as well as different support systems and environmental pressures. As a result, a personalized approach is required. This enables PMOs to manage the complexities of the business, the people involved, and the work at hand with care.
  3. Why is Lean Six Sigma still a significant business model in 2022?

Think it’s become even more essential in the 25 years since it was initially formed. Initially, the concept gained momentum in manufacturing as an effective way of eliminating waste and improving quality; but, as Lean principles were more integrated into it, it was subsequently adopted in service industries as well.

Today, as our world evolves, it gets more competitive through innovation in products and services, platforms, and distribution systems. As a result, having a process in place to address continual improvement is important.

Finding a Reason for Lean Six Sigma

What are the criteria for implementing Lean Six Sigma if an organization or individual professional has yet to dive into it? Do you, for example, have dissatisfied customers? Do you have any product returns? Is it necessary to rework your outputs at the end of a production cycle?

These are just a few of the reasons why you should have a system in place to identify specific problems in your organization. Finally, you want to be able to give customers what they want at the lowest possible cost to you by employing an organized, methodical approach to problem-solving.

The five-step DMAIC process is important to the Lean Six Sigma approach:

Define: that includes everything related to a process, beginning with what the customer needs, identifying what is important to the job, and defining each stage in the process, including who, what, which materials, and outputs.

Measure: what are the important characteristics along the process, such as inventory, time, defect counts, time spent on reworks, and so on?

Analyze: what does the data indicate? Where is the production process paused? What elements could be affecting output quality?

Improve: how do you make things better? How can you improve process flow? How do you keep track of your inventory?

Control: what procedures do you need in place to collect input and ensure that the fixes stay in place?

This procedure has a significant impact on quality and efficiency in a production context.

Siemens Automotive’s plant in Mexico, for example, assembles instrument panels for different cars and experienced a recurring fault on the assembly line. Circuit boards were failing when put in vehicles; utilizing Lean Six Sigma, we assisted them in identifying the issue: human mistake when installing a device, which caused the electronics to short.

Service industries can increase quality while reducing waste

Although many of the concepts in Lean Six Sigma originated in the industrial industry, the methodologies are still applicable to service businesses, whether you work in accounting, mortgage processing, or coding. People in these surroundings must nevertheless go through some processes to perform the task.

For example, obtaining a mortgage loan necessitates an application, data collection (credit reports, etc.), and the creation of approval for the customer. According to a study conducted by Studio Graphene, digitization is not easy, and in around one-third of situations, organizations have canceled digitally engaged projects, citing a lack of required skills as a major contributing reason. It is important to identify employees who not only understand technology but can also capitalize on its benefits. However, having an agile project team that can collaborate to develop and deliver complicated transformative software even in times of acute flux is important.

As a result, many organizations are implementing Scrum to turn strategy into reality. The Agile Expansion

Many organizations have concentrated on the adoption of Agile approaches in recent years, including the deployment of Agile Pilots and the use of Agile at the core of their IT. These projects fall under what we call Agile adoption, which differs from Agile transformation in five critical areas: change speed, timeline, productivity gains, impact on organizational structure, and cultural change. The most significant Agile adoption barriers, according to the 15th State of Agile report, have remained largely unchanged for several years and include inconsistencies in processes and practices (46%), cultural clashes (43%), general organizational resistance to change (42%), a lack of skills and experience (42%), a lack of leadership participation (41%), and inadequate management support and sponsorship (40%).

Scrum’s Proponents

Scrum provides a framework that helps project teams to adapt to change and produce greater value quickly and regularly, whether they are made up of software engineers, product managers, or business analysts.

Teams can respond to new and changing requirements, such as a shift in customer needs, and adapt to new market conditions, which may impact a new strategic direction, by employing an evidence-based framework. In essence, the approach avoids using a restrictive sequential approach to project management that is commonly constrained by technicalities and a prescriptive way of doing things in favor of a more minimal set of working parameters that encourage more flexibility and, ultimately, more successful outcomes.
