How Does Vocabulary Test Help with Spelling Words?

Haven’t we all made silly spelling mistakes while writing? Like, writing “beleive” instead of “believe.” Don’t worry, it’s quite common. However, when it comes to misspelling unknown words, things are a bit different. In these cases, you are basically guessing the probable spelling.

This issue is very common among young students as they tend to have a smaller vocabulary. A lot of students struggle to amass an above-average vocabulary.

So, if a school-going student wants to have fewer spelling mistakes while writing, building up a substantial vocabulary collection will help a lot.

As you can see, spelling skills and vocabulary are closely connected. Well, you probably knew that from all along. But, did you know a linear learning model to have a compelling spelling skill starts with a vocabulary test?

Yes!

That’s what we would focus on today – the correlation between a vocabulary test and spelling words and that linear learning model.

Test Your Current Vocabulary Level First

Let’s say you want to have excellent spelling skill with a minimum number of spelling mistakes. A full-proof strategy would be knowing all the everyday words so that you don’t come across too many unknown words.

Although there’s been a lot of debate on the exact number of words an average native speaker knows, we can assume the 20,000 words to be a sweet spot.

Now that you know your target number, you need to know your current conditions too.

That’s where the importance of vocabulary comes to play!

A decent vocabulary tester will help you figure out the estimated number. Of course, no vocabulary tester can go word-by-word to give you the exact number.

So, what can be your solution here?

There are a few good sources, but I prefer using the SpellQuiz vocabulary tester. They offer tons of premium spelling sessions and useful tools for enhancing spelling, listening, and vocabulary skills.

Create a Plan to Develop Vocabulary

We need to focus on two things at the same time here – vocabulary build-up and spelling. Rather than taking different approaches to work on these two aspects, you should combine them together.

How so?

Think of it like this – developing vocabulary simply means to have a complete grasp of the words. And, if you manage to memorize the spelling of those words, you’re good to go!

So, focus on increasing your vocabulary properly, and you’ll eventually master spelling words like Spelling Bees!

Now, let’s get on that planning part.

You can use many use various strategies –

  • Flashcards
  • Use mobile or desktop apps
  • Read books (fictions for fun!)
  • Watch foreign language movies/TV shows with subtitles

You should use multiple variants of vocabulary increasing strategies at the same time.

However, the key to success is not tied to the choice of exercise method but the regularity of the practice. You need to take part in those regularly. You might not get enough time to practice every day, but you need to have several sessions in a week.

Use Pen and Paper for Better Spelling Skills

This is one of the common mistakes that we all are guilty of. We think verbal learning techniques are good enough to memorize anything, especially spelling.

It’s a dangerous path to choose!

While you are actively taking part in vocabulary enhancing practice or spelling practice, have a piece of paper and pen nearby. Our brains help us to retain any information better if we write it down. Sadly, typing words with your keyboard will not have the same results.

Take Help from Online

It’s the era of technology. We all have smartphones and personal computer. What do we do with them? Gaming, using social media platforms, watching movies or YouTube videos?

If you are struggling with spelling words, you can use all the “entertainment” devices for education and learning too.

As I said earlier, I prefer SpellQuiz when it comes to spelling and vocabulary practice. They have vocabulary tester and a plethora of spelling practice sessions.

That mean’s after having an estimation of your vocabulary collection, you can take part in the spelling practice sessions. They have categorized the spelling sessions grade-wise, from grade 1 to grade 12 and even adults.

In these spelling sessions, you’ll hear sentences and will be asked to type the sentence flawlessly. After you do that, their automated tool will show you the number of correct spellings and will also show you your mistakes.

The best part is that the dictations are done by human voice artists, not those weird bot voices!

If you enroll in their premium subscription, you can access your personalized dashboard. This dashboard gives you a detailed result of your entire practice sessions since day one.

Final Words

You can think of SpellQuiz as your practice partner who gives all the essential materials keeps track of your progress.

So, start with a vocabulary test to get better at spelling words and SpellQuiz will help you all along the way!
